Alkaloids

Alkaloids are a group of naturally occurring chemical compounds produced by a large variety of organisms. They are typically bitter tasting and are often produced in plants as part of their chemical defense as well as regulate growth of the organism in some cases. Many alkaloids are toxic and often have pharmacological effects. They are often named after the botanical from which they were isolated adding a suffix of “ine�.
